A Hot Monday in Fall

We came in Monday morning and put away our stuff and sat down.  We got out our planners, and turned in our Friday update sheets.  We got everything ready for our math and our band transition.  Then we took the time to talk for a minute about different stories that had happened to us during our weekend.

Next, we got our band books if we needed them and went down to band.  We worked on putting half of our instruments together.  (Some people even got to put their WHOLE instrument together).  We sat in our chairs and waited for the band instructor to tell us what to do.  It can be boring sometimes to wait, but it is important because the different sections all need a chance to learn.  All of the sections also got to learn how to play the different notes on their instruments. After band, we went to library.  When we walked in, we noticed Mrs. Smaltz wasn’t there.  Ms. Loker was there instead as our sub.  In library we learned about a book.  The title was Grasshopper Summer.  Ms. Loker said that you would like Grasshopper Summer if you like the series Little House on the Prairie. In math we did a couple of timed tests.  We got back our tests from Friday.  Most students were happy or very happy with how they did.  Overall they thought it was a pretty easy test.  In math we learned about equality and about how 37 + M = 50.  We had to subtract 37 from 50 and then when we get our answer, that would be M.  This is called missing addends. After math was Language Arts.  We made subject and verb cards with words from our individual topics. We talked about what good writing is and isn’t.  We took notes about complete sentences.   After Language Arts we did a read aloud of the story The Marble Champ.    Then we read in partners to read more of the story. After we were done with Language Arts we went to recess!  We had fun.  Some people played kickball.  Some people did the mileage club.  Some people played on the playground set.  Some people had singing competitions. After recess was lunch, and then A.R. time.  This week  we are getting to read around the room, and three people are getting to read on the couch each day.  Everyone must be enjoying their books, because when A.R. time was over some students had a hard time putting their books away. After A.R. reading time was read aloud.  We began a new book, No Talking, by Andrew Clements.  It is about a fifth grade boy named Dave who has decided to see if he can go a whole day without talking.  We read one chapter, and then we had to stop, even though many kids groaned and wanted Ms. Morris to read more. When we were done with read aloud it was writing journal time.  Today’s invitation was “write about fall”.  Many students continued to work on stories, but some students really did write about fall, and had some interesting pieces to read. We did not have social studies or science today because instead we had a Tuba Bach assembly after our writing journal time, where we got to hear a famous bluegrass harmonica player.   He told us about a class that you could take at City Hall tonight for $25.  He also played songs on his harmonica using words from students, including Hannah’s Igga-flyga-fleega-flyga-ishka-nishka-niiga-niiga-igga-flyga-fleega-flyga-birdie!  She got to go up on stage and say it into the microphone and he recorded it and used it in making his song! After our exciting assembly we came back to the classroom and worked together to write the Roving Reporter entry you are reading!  We talked about Roving Reporter and how it would work, and Ms. Morris typed while we all helped come up with ideas. After this it was time to fill out our planners and do our end of the day jobs.  We did not have planner sheets, so we used notebook paper.  We got everything together and then lined up at the door.   Today was a record temperature hot day for fall, but we survived! -by the whole class, including Ms. Morris
